One of the projects we support in Central Asia is a knowledge store... It is a place that special needs children can come to get the extra help they need... sometimes it is long lasting , other times it only for a few weeks to get them ready for public school. In fact, several of the kids we have provided simple dreams for have attended here to help them get caught up after missing school due to their health conditions. One of the scary things that we find is that sometimes it is something as little as this extra help that can keep a child out of an orphanage.. facing destitute poverty, parents sometimes feel that if their children were in an orphanage ,they would get the care they need...
The knowledge store is set up in such a way that any child can get help regardless of their financial status...
Teachers are independent , like a co-operative. They pay a portion of their fees back to the centre, for over head, and must also do a certain percentage of their time pro-bono... in this way , there are always spots available for those who can not afford it...
The only financial input required for outside is for capital projects like the centre we renovated in the spring.. well that's not totally accurate... when we looked over the Year end financial reports, we found that they were running a $15 a month deficit, however the overhead in the new facility is a lot more reasonable , so they will actually finish this year in the black. It is a fantastic example of self sustainability that we are so proud to be a part of.
I just received word from our friend that they have just received their operating licence to teach children as well as English lessons... this has been a big concern for them, but now they will be able to expand and start advertising their services...
